National Shutdown: Restaurants Open and Helping in the Portland Metro

Tomorrow—Friday, January 30, 2026—is a National Shutdown day across the country, in response to the killings by ICE. The campaign’s subtitle is “No Work. No School. No Shopping. Stop Funding ICE.” It’s a kind of general strike.

However, in Portland there are a lot of small businesses that simply can’t shut down for the day, due to economic reasons. And while “no shopping” might mean “don’t spend your money anywhere,” it’s generally understood to mean that shopping at small, independent businesses is ok.

There are a number of small, independent Portland food businesses staying open and choosing to donate some of their proceeds of the day or week to organizations helping immigrants, as well as providing a place to rest and something to eat and drink. A few are closed Friday but open this weekend and are donating part of sales to relevant organizations, so we’ve included them, too, as supporters of the efforts.

Here are the ones we know about, and there are many heavy-hitters in the Portland-area dining scene on it. Many thanks to Judith Rich for doing the legwork to compile this list.
