Score, A Baker Fair Returns This June in Portland

I’m so happy to tell you that Score, A Baker Fair is back! This is now their second annual sale and it takes place again at Zenger Farm. There are some new things for this year, and here is what you need to know.

The Basics

Score, A Baker Fair will take place on Sunday, June 14 from 10am to 2pm at Zenger Farm in Southeast Portland. Tickets are $10, but at the writing of this article there are some at $20 that will get you early entry at 10am. The $10 tickets admit you at 10:30am. They’ve kept ticket prices low to make the event as accessible as possible.

These early entry tickets allow you early access to the vendors giving you a little more time to interact with them and purchase their goods. You can buy your tickets here. Note: humans under 12-years old get in free.

Last year over 600 people attended! I was happy to be one of them, and will be one of them this year, too (I bought my ticket right before I started drafting this article).

What Is Score, A Baker Fair?

Score, A Baker Fair was founded by pastry chef Eve Küttemann of Southwind Microbakery and Chefs Week PDX co-founder Drew Tyson. It celebrates Portland’s indie baking community; last year we called them “microbakeries.” Small, independently run bakeries, many of which operate without storefronts and outside of traditional food systems as far as how they get their goods into your hot little hands.. I’ve run across many of them through my travels along social media.

It was pretty great to see the variety of products last year. It was there that I was introduced to a donut treated like a pretzel, the amazing layer cakes by Riley Seasonal Cakes, and some incredible sourdough breads.

Last year there were a dozen bakers and a couple of vendors selling related non-edible items, but this year they will have as many as 20 vendors. Plus fun farm activities for adults and kids, and free coffee from Stumptown Coffee—drip and cold brew. It was a very warm day last year, and it might be hot again this year, so cold coffee will be a nice option. Hopefully, though, it will be cooler this year.

Zenger Farm

Proceeds from ticket sales go directly to Zenger Farm to support their community programs and events (bakers keep 100% of their sales). Last year I wrote that they describe this place as “a working urban farm that models, promotes, and educates about sustainable food systems, environmental stewardship, community development, and access to good food for all.”

The Lineup

There are a number of returning bakers and vendors. They are:

Newcomers include:

There will be at least a couple of vegan bakers in attendance. Note: This is not a gluten-free event.

From the Organizers

“Last year we weren’t sure what to expect, but seeing so many people show up with that kind of excitement and watching the bakers form friendships made it clear there’s a real appetite for this,” said Drew. “Not everyone knows that some of Portland’s most talented bakers are creating out of their own homes, and Score exists to give them a bigger stage.”

“This year we have such a wide array of bakers,” said Eve. “From seasoned chefs with prestigious wholesale contracts and in-demand wedding cake designers who are booked out for months, to super talented creatives who are just launching their dream business.  Whether this is their 1,000th event or their first, the breadth of talent in this market is stunning, from Korean salt bread and kolaches to cake slices and a Butterfinger dupe called a “fudderbinger.” To have access to such a variety of hard-to-find treats while soaking up a beautiful farm in late spring is a whole experience, and I can’t wait for folks to come sample the goods.

I think this is going to be a great event full of amazing baked goods. I hope to see you there!
