It’s true—Screaming Sammies returns! I recently got the news that Gary is back for another summer selling his boffo ice cream sandwiches on the streets of Sellwood. And he has a new flavor this year—read on to learn more.

A Bit About Gary

In case you haven’t met Gary, you should. He is an energetic and friendly person who loves what he does. He has a background in product development—which helped him develop his ice cream sandwiches—as well as marketing, sales, and publishing. After he retired from that career, he and his wife founded an online cookie company called Dingel’s Oven, which was distributed nationwide during its lifespan. Cost issues ended that project.

But it means he has a lot of experience making the cookies he uses in his ice cream sandwiches. He adapted the Dingel’s Oven recipes for this product, which has been very successful in the neighborhood.

“It’s still a one-man show,” said Gary. “I make all my own ice cream and cookies, from scratch, in small batches, fresh every week.”

Screaming Sammies Returns, but at a New Location

Last year he was near SE 13th Avenue and Miller in front of the Sellwood Cycle Repair. This year he’s on SE Milwaukie Avenue and SE Claybourne, right opposite The Last Rodeo. Fairlane Coffee is nearby, too.

He’s big on the new location. “It’s been great!” exclaimed Gary. “The folks in Westmoreland and SE PDX have been wonderful, SO supportive and a joy to meet, every week.”

The Schedule

Just like at the previous location, he sells his ice cream sandwiches exclusively on Sundays (weather permitting), from noon until about 6pm. He started up last month and hopes to continue through mid-October.

High heat and rain could derail his plans for any given Sunday, so keep that in mind. And during the month of May he sold out each Sunday: “I’m often out of Sammies before 6pm,” he wrote on Instagram.

Screaming Sammies Returns With Familiar Flavors—and a New One

The classic flavors are back!

  • S’crunch!: Vanilla ice cream with graham crackers mixed into it, sandwiched between two chocolate chip fudge brownie cookies.
  • Squash!: Chocolate ice cream sandwiched between two graham cracker/peanut butter cookies.
  • Squeeze!: Vanilla ice cream with lemon zest sandwiched between two ginger molasses cookies.
  • Smash!: Vanilla ice cream with sea salt caramel and brownies, sandwiched between two fudge brownie cookies.
  • Squish!: Vanilla ice cream sandwiched between semi-sweet chocolate chip cookies.
  • Caffe Spumati: Toasted pecan infused coffee ice cream sandwiched between two ginger molasses cookies.

“For a limited time, I’m now featuring my Seasonal Special: S’quatchberry,” said Gary. “It’s a delicious blend of seedless marionberries, swirled into a rich vanilla base, sandwiched between two, soft, delish, fudge brownie cookies. They go fast!”

And he has a new process for preparing your ice cream sandwich in front of you: “I now build each Sammie as ordered,” he explained. “As my frozen ice cream ‘pucks”’are kept chill, while the corresponding cookies are fresh, soft and stored in a cooler. So much better!”

He added, “Also, I’m happy to report, that I have ditched the plastic containers! No more recyclable plastic, in favor of simple, compostable paper cups.” This is good news.

Gary’s tagline is “Handmade Happiness.” I think that sums it up pretty well. Having had his sammies, I can tell you—they are really good. I look forward to stopping by this summer, too.
