There’s been a good amount of chitter chatter regarding the old Take Two/Toyshop Ramen space on NE Killingsworth, and through a series of tips plus a liquor license application, we’ve learned that the new business will be called Foxchase Tavern.
Here’s what we know so far.
Foxchase Tavern: What’s in a Name?
My first clue was from a Bridgetown Bites tipster, “I believe its named after the official city designation for this part of NE Portland/Concordia …. ‘Foxchase Addition.'” Further research brings up a few articles, but in short, Foxchase was the name of a subdivision in the Concordia neighborhood, created in 1889, originally filed in the town of East Portland.
You can see still see it indicated on modern maps—these were found on PortlandMaps (click to enlarge):

And this old map below, which was posted on the Alameda Old House History blog. They indicate, “Only the numbered streets retain their identity today. McCaffrey = Alberta. Junker = Sumner. Alvan = Emerson. Birch = Killingsworth. The intersection of NE 30th and Killingsworth anchors the northwest corner.”
I kind of prefer Birch to Killingsworth, ngl.

They have written about the history of Foxchase, so instead of my summarizing much more, I recommend heading over there to learn more.
You can also see the building there on the right in this archival photo below:

The Tinker Tavern Connection
This is a project from Erik Mahan, who you may know as the person who opened Tinker Tavern in the Montavilla neighborhood. He opened it in December 2020—early on during the COVID pandemic. Montavilla News reported on it then, with this detail: “Tinker Tavern took a year to come to completion. COVID-19 delays in construction and navigating operational restrictions tripled buildout timelines.”
Status of Foxchase Tavern
Hopefully, the work on Foxchase Tavern will be minimal. No recent permits have been filed, and since it’s going from bar to bar, perhaps it is more of a turnkey-level exchange.
There is a big dumpster out front right now.

As I mentioned earlier, they have filed a liquor license application, which indicates seating numbers (50 inside, 12 outdoor) and what seems to me to be a placeholder as far as days and times open, so more details on those will be forthcoming.

Tinker Tavern is known for its Buffalo, NY-inspired bar food. But will Foxchase Tavern be the same? It could go either way—I’ve reached out to Erik to learn more information and will update this article with new details that come my way.
