Don’t Miss Pasta Night at Grand Army Tavern in Portland

Not only are the pastas fantastic, Grand Army Tavern also has a menu of excellent no-proof cocktails—behold the Strawberry Fields.

The other night I had a meal at a place I’d been wanting to go for many months: Grand Army Tavern in the Woodlawn neighborhood in Northeast Portland. Despite my #westcoastbestcoast motto, I do love connecting with things NYC out here, and that includes the owners of Grand Central Tavern, as well as my dining companions for the evening, Teri of @teristravels and her husband, both Queens natives; my boyfriend was a long-time Queens resident. I’m so glad Teri invited us to Pasta Night, and there is no doubt that I’ll be returning for their beautiful, lovingly-made pastas.

Looks like the Hollywood District is getting another coffee shop—Oregon-based chain Black Rock Coffee Bar will open in a ground floor retail space in the new Laurel42 apartment building. Portland Pizza Week 2019 Is Almost Here

pizza-week-2019-portland-oregon

Portland has some great food-themed weeks (and months), and the next one on the docket is Pizza Week, produced by the Portland Mercury. From Monday through Saturday, April 15-20, over 40 slices at pizzerias across the city will be available for just $2.

This year there are plenty of puns in the names of the slices: Moroccan Your World, Over Acheeser, This Is Spinal Hatch, and Taco’n It to the Streets, to start. Nice job, everyone.

Back After an Unplanned Break + Good Eats

Herring Under a Fur Coat at Kachka

The classic Herring Under a Fur Coat at Kachka, one of the delicious things I ate in the past couple of months.

Well, it’s been about two months since I last visited this little blog, and I sure didn’t mean to be absent for that long. Life took priority—estate work took a lot of my attention, but so did the emotional component of cancer recovery. I just didn’t have enough in me. But that has changed—I still have estate work and am still recovering from cancer, but my focus is better.

As a way of re-entry, I thought I’d recap some of the delicious things I ate in February and March.

Dumpling Week 2019 in Portland

Pork and Leek Dumplings

The pork and leek dumplings from Chin’s Kitchen.

The Oregonian’s Fifth Annual Dumpling Week is back here in early 2019—get your fill of dough-encased delights for $10 or less from 36 places in Portland from Friday, February 1 to Saturday, February 9. The dumpling passport is back, too: download it here.

You can find the full list of participating restaurants on the Dumpling Week website, (also in map form) but if you’re like me, it will be hard to hit them all. Real talk: even though I focus some of my time on food and eating, I also have a roster of clients who need my time, too. So, if I was to visit one place a day (and twice on the weekend) for the nine days, here’s where I’d go.

Boke Bowl. Szechuan style 5-spice duck dumplings, a fantastic flavor combination. Boke East, 1028 SE Water Ave; Boke West, 1200 NW Northrup. bokebowl.com. Daily 11am-9pm.
