Happy Birthday, Sebastiano’s! On Tuesday, June 4, owners Dan and Elise celebrated five years running Sebastiano’s. They started out in a tiny space in Montavilla (now the home to Quiche Me If You Can) and moved to a much bigger space in Sellwood in April 2024. I love their food but I’ll always cherish their ricotta cake, one of which I had made for my wedding a couple of years ago. Sending them my best, and if you haven’t been by I urge you to stop there soon! 8235 SE 13th Ave # 7, Portland
The Hawthorne Street Food and Bar pod opens officially this weekend. On Friday and Saturday, June 7, this pod on Hawthorne and 42nd is celebrating with some grand opening specials: $5 beer and $10 cocktails (they are also offering these today). There will be live music on Saturday, too. The pod has 13 carts and a full bar. 4225 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland
Bar Mame turns 2! From Friday, June 6 to Monday, June 9, Bar Mame will offer a couple specials: $10 signature cocktails and $5 Aperol Spritzes on the patio. No reservations needed. 3279 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland
Pápa’s Frita also turns 2. This Saturday, Pápa’s Frita (self-described as “Portland’s first Nicaraguan restaurant”) will celebrate it’s second anniversary. They are at Migration Brewing in North Portland. “There will be a piñata for the kids a las 3 from Boom Boom Balloon, @momotombosoundsystem spinning the tunes and Nica music from 5-9, the best and only Fritanga in Oregon from yours truly, and award winning beer from @migrationbrewing.” 3947 North Williams Avenue, Portland
Bajala turns 1! Although they are no longer at the Nob Hill Food Carts, they are popping up around Portland. And this Saturday they are celebrating their first year in business with a pop-up at Commensal Fermentation. In the words of Bajala:
“To celebrate, we’re bringing you fresh oysters straight from San Quintín thanks to our dear friends @leondelpacifico.mx, along with all the Baja-style seafood, tacos, beer, and wine you’ve come to love!” They are also teaming up with the Pop-ups Please folks for this event, and @chosenonemark will be spinning ambient DJ sets. 3901 N Williams Avenue, Suite A, Portland
Kate’s NW 23rd Avenue location also turns 1 this weekend. This Saturday, June 7, is their first birthday and they are celebrating with a special treat: Drumsticks. Flavors include cookie dough, strawberry sprinkle, and peanut brittle vanilla. They’ll start being available at noon at the NW 23rd location, and when they are gone, they’re gone. 1430 NW 23rd Avenue, Portland
Stone Soup PDX cafe has opened. In Montavilla, the Stone Soup organization has opened their cafe on NE Glisan Street and 74th Avenue. You can stop for breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Friday from 7am to 2pm. Originally they opened in 2019 in NW Portland on the edge of Old Town, but the COVID pandemic took them down.
Montavilla news published a story on the new cafe with these helpful details: “Starting in July, Stone Soup’s operators expect students to begin staffing the cafe as they learn food service skills in a 12-week program geared toward individuals who have recently experienced housing insecurity.” Read more over on Montavilla News. 7400 NE Glisan Street, Portland
Nodoguro opens downtown today. Axios reports that this celebrated Japanese fine-dining restaurant (chef-owner Ryan Roadhouse is up for a James Beard Award, too) are opening their downtown location today. Their previous Kerns location will be Peter Cat full time, “izakaya-style dining series focused on sake pairings.” Meira Gebel has a lot of good info in her article, so check it out. 515 SW Broadway, Suite 100, Portland
CC Slaughters will close. Sunday, August 3 will be their final day in business. This LGBTQ+ dance club has been open since 1981 in the Old Town neighborhood. Bruce Rice, the current owner, has operated it for the past 22 years. They plan to say goodbye in a “big way.” The end of an era, no matter how you slice it. 219 NW Davis Street, Portland
Arson at Ka-Te Restaurant & Bar. It happened in the early morning of Tuesday, June 3. Ka-Te is a Vietnamese bar and restaurant in the Lents neighborhood. Portland Fire & Rescue responded around 2am to the fire—sounds like was on the patio and was encroaching on the structure. Everyone inside was able to get out. The firefighters were able to put out the fire successfully.
From the press release: “Due to the suspicious nature of the fire the command officer requested the on-duty fire investigator to the scene. After interviewing individuals present, evaluating the fire damage, reviewing footage from the location security camera and calling for Kiki, the PF&R accelerate detection K9, this fire was confirmed to be caused by an act of arson. Arson 1 charges are applicable in this act which carries a minimum sentence of 90 months if convicted.”
They are looking for the suspect. If you live in the area, check your outdoor security cameras during the 1am to 2am time period on June 3. You can contact 503-823-FIRE (3473) if you have any information that may help in identifying this individual. 3554 SE 82nd Avenue Portland
Carts have been moving in to the Delta Carts Food Pod. They are very close to opening and it’s been great to see this place progress. Getta Gyro and Korean Tiger are two of the carts setting up shop at Delta Carts Food Pod; more to come. 1223 N Hayden Meadows Drive, Portland
Coffee and tariffs and Oregon. Importers, roasters, and cafe owners are frustrated over the state of tariffs in the U.S. Twelve of them met with U.S. Representative Suzanne Bonamici (1st Congressional District) recently inside the Buckman Coffee Factory co-roasting and education space. Among other things, they “[urged] the congresswoman to push for an exemption for coffee under the new tariff orders.” Read more here.
The Sports Bra expands. I remember writing about The Sports Bra back in 2022 and being pretty excited about the idea of a whole bar devoted to women’s sports. It’s been hugely popular, especially on big game days.
And now they are expanding—via franchising—into four other cities in the U.S.: Boston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, and St. Louis. Here’s the announcement on their Instagram page. Multiple locations
Do you love pandan? Head to Soro Soro Cafe. I love pandan (BTW, Joe at FIKA makes wonderful pandan desserts from time to time), and I like matcha, so my eye caught this new pandan matcha cream latte they are serving these days. They arguably make the cutest desserts in town, too. 2250 E Burnside Street, Portland
This will not be the last Jollibee in Oregon. The opening of the very first Jollibee in Oregon was met with an incredible enthusiasm. People slept outside the restaurant overnight, and some spoke about their fond memories of eating Jollibee during their childhood in the Philippines. Here’s a bit from their opening day. (And yes, the smiling bee-man mascot statue is there, right in front!)
My sources say that because of this overwhelmingly popular reception in Hillsboro, the Jollibee PTB plan to open some other locations in Oregon, and they already have a peach-mango-pie-shaped eye on them. Details are in the ether, but as to when and where … that will become clear eventually and I hope to pass that on to you. 10875 NE Cornell Road, Hillsboro
No Saint wants to expand. And they are fundraising for it. Their goal is “to build a six-seat bar, expand our dining room seating, & redesign the kitchen around our wood-burning oven.” Ways you can contribute: buy their merch, No Saint dining credits, and a discounted restaurant buyout (they currently seat about 40). More information is on their Instagram. 1603 NE Killingsworth Street, Portland
Hiyaku Buffet will open in Beaverton. Located near the Element Portland Beaverton hotel (a Marriott property) in the old Papa’s Pizza Parlor, this Asian buffet restaurant will open, probably in a month or two. And I believe the person who owns this is also behind Beaverton’s Ajisai Sushi & Grill, too, which is pretty much ready to open. 15700 NW Blueridge Drive, Beaverton
