ICYMI: Stumptown Fil said we’ll have six more weeks of winter. And that’s despite Feb 2 being the start of spring on the old calendar. Guess that means there’s more time to complete your Winter Soup Bingo card. Multiple locations
Stumptown Coffee’s SE Belmont cafe will close. It comes down to economics:
“Our decision to close this location is due to the high cost of refurbishing the space to meet today’s needs. So, while this chapter is coming to a close, our commitment to Portland is not. We’re actively looking for our next cafe home and look forward to welcoming you there when the time comes.” Their final day of service will be Saturday, February 28. Word on the street sez they are looking for another space close by. 3356 SE Belmont Street, Portland
Kurt Huffman weighs in on the attempts at a foie gras ban in Portland. As the owner of ChefStable, “a Portland-based restaurant management group with over 30 restaurants in the Portland area,” it’s understandable that he has opinions about the foie gras ban that’s been in front of the City Council. When it comes to animal welfare, he highlights commodity chicken farming, which is problematic. Read more of his opinion piece in The Oregonian.

It’s Pear Month at Sugarpine Drive-In. Did you know that pears are official state fruit of Oregon? And Sugarpine Drive-In is celebrating them this month. USA Pears is involved (they used to be a part of FEAST, if I remember correctly). From Sugarpine:
“February’s specials live inside our ‘Winter Comforts, French Roots’ menu—with pears poached, caramelized, pickled, baked, dried, and paired with sweet and savory dishes that need something bright and lightly sweet to bring them into balance.”
Check their menu for more details—they’ve got sandwiches, a pear cocktail, sundae, cookie, and an intriguing NA wine alternative (origins in Australia) made with roasted pears, kombu, black tea, verjus, and warming spices. 1208 E Historic Columbia River Hwy, Troutdale

The Malarkey hopes to open this summer. This is the former Oba space we’ve written about. The O spoke with restaurateur Brian Malarkey about the new steakhouse with a projected opening of July 2026. It’s going to be called “The Malarkey” (similar to the name of the LLC behind the project). Here’s what you can anticipate there:
- The entrance leads you up a ramp “inspired by the Oregon Coast.”
- At the top is an “homage to Portland,” including downtown portrayed as “grungy.”
- A motorcycle will be on the wall in reference to the film, “My Own Private Idaho.”
- Spot a golden stag (a nod to the Thompson Elk Fountain), above a sunken bar.
- An Italian statue of the goddess Nike will be present.
- There will be “Portlandia” chickens.
- Stripper poles in the bathroom.
- The vibe will be over the top, described as “kitschy.”
- There will be a private event room with a “psychedelic forest” look that can hold 60 people.
“The key to The Malarkey’s success will be getting people from the suburbs to visit downtown.” 555 NW 12th Avenue, Portland
Fogo de ChĂŁo will open in Tigard. Their opening date is set for Monday, February 9, 2026. On their website they mention that this is their second Oregon location, which “features a warm, timeless, and approachable setting.” If you like meat, having a meal at a churrasascaria is a treat—I’ve always liked the pieces of meat wrapped with bacon, ngl. You also get to watch them butcher, prepare, and cook your meats over an open churrasco grill.
They also boast an expansive dining room “centered around a fresh and seasonal Market Table anchored at the front of the grill, dry-aged meat lockers for in-house aging, and a lively indoor Bar Fogo area, ideal for smaller, shareable plates and craft cocktails.”
They also plan to donate 10% of its first week of sales to the Oregon Food Bank. 17015 SW 72nd Avenue, Tigard
Cider Riot owner Abram Goldman-Armstrong wins lawsuit. On May 1, 2019, members of Patriot Prayer, a far-right group, attacked the now-shuttered cidery and individuals in attendance. Goldman-Armstrong was awarded over $760,000 in damages. KGW has the details.

Chocolate bombolini at Sebastiano’s. Last month their passion fruit bombolini blew me away, and I can only imagine their chocolate version is gonna be a smash, too. Head over there and check it out. 8235 SE 13th Avenue, Suite 7, Portland
Check out the Glow Bar during the Portland Winter Light Festival. There will be a bar offering local beer and wine, and specialty-themed cocktails, as well as rotating food carts nightly. 111 SW Columbia Street, Portland
And over at Nostrana … They are a host space this year for the Portland Winter Light Festival:
“Nostrana transforms l’Orto into an immersive world of color and light with a glowing installation from the celebrated Milan-based duo Carnovsky, the artists behind the iconic RGB series that has captivated design lovers around the world since its debut in 2010. Their work explores the shifting relationship between printed imagery and colored light, revealing hidden layers, alternate scenes, and dreamlike transformations as the spectrum moves.” 1401 SE Morrison Street #101, Portland
Elephants Deli is also getting in on the PDXWLF action. That would be the Elephants World Trade location. They’ll be open for extended hours and featuring a special menu for the event this weekend and next. From our contact there:
“The Winter Light Festival pop-up menu highlights our partnership with Olympia Provisions. We’ll be serving up Olympia Provisions’ traditional gourmet bratwurst and foot long hot dogs for the next two weekends, as well as a delicious chili cheese hot dog made with our new Rose City Vegan Chili. The pop-up menu is designed to offer quick turnaround for guests, and delicious hand-held foods that are able to be enjoyed on-the-go.” 127 SW Salmon Street, Portland
Issued then appealed, and a hearing: The DQ drive-though. In case you missed it, the property owner of the DQ on SE Division had their drive-through approved, but a Portlander appealed. Now it goes in front of a hearing officer with the city. The hearing is 9am on February 25 over Zoom. Here is information on how to participate.
I just took a look at the emails submitted by the public and out of the 10 emails uploaded, the overwhelming sentiment is to open the DQ, with the drive-through. Online
The Superb Owl is Sunday. AKA the Super Bowl, this year Seattle Seahawks play the New England Patriots, and KOIN has put together a roundup on where to watch things go down. ETA: Bad Bunny! Green Day! How could I forget that‽ Multiple locations

Floyd’s Coffee … more of the story. In our article on Case Study Coffee moving into the old King Harvest space, we included a summary of the experience Floyd’s Coffee Shop had in that space. One of the original owners of Floyd’s (now located in the middle of Ladd’s Addition) shared this comment that I wanted to republish here:
“I’d like to update a few of the details between Floyd’s Coffee Shop and their nefarious landlord Howard Durand. I was one of the owners. After Howard unsuccessfully tried to evict us he then tried to get us to pay for utilities. He hadn’t thought to put that into the lease and then tried to retroactively charge us about $25, 000 over our 4.5 years tenancy.
“We actually weren’t evicted, instead he refused to honor our rollover agreement because of a lease loophole. Howard often would tell us ‘you’ve got a gold mine here’ and well, he wanted it for his own. But unfortunately for him it was never meant to be.
“Instead we built out our next shop half way down the block-secretly. We moved into our new space without missing a single day of business and we took our gold mine with us.” Was 1502 SE Morrison Street, now 1996 SE Ladd Avenue, Portland
Get ready for Chowder Fest. On Sunday, February 22, head to Lake Oswego for Chowder Fest. Five chowders by local chefs will be available for tasting. Lake Oswego Coffee House & Wine Bar has opened. Their grand opening was Tuesday, February 3, and it was a success! They are open from 6:30am to 7pm. In the mornings they have coffee, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches served until 11am; they’ve also got bagels and sandwiches for lunch; at 3pm they start their wine service and charcuterie. Plus they say they make their sourdough products with an 80-year old starter. Nice. 148 B Avenue, Suite 200, Lake Oswego
Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is tomorrow. Head over to Kate’s Ice Cream on North Mississippi for their annual Ice Cream for Breakfast Day from 9am to noon. They’ll have “warm, fresh gluten-free waffles topped with your choice of ice cream, plus freshly brewed coffee from Upper Left Roasters.” They’ll also offer a limited-edition “Ice Cream for Breakfast at Kate’s” mug, designed by local artist, David Dacosta. First 20 customers get a free mug. 3713 N Mississippi Avenue, Portland
Prince Coffee will open a third cafe. Slated for a spring 2026 opening, it looks like they are moving into the old Atomic Pizza location on N Killingsworth. Folks in the comments guessed this; the address, shape of the windows, and proximity to Plaid Pantry all line. up. 1936 N Killingsworth Street, Portland
G-Love has an Executive Chef for the first time ever. This Slabtown restaurant has officially named Jackson Hallenburg Executive Chef at G-Love. He’s been working there for the past four years. They call him “our glue in the kitchen.” Big congrats! 1615 NW 21st Avenue, Portland
Gogo Pot will open in Hillsboro. Formerly the home to Hops n Drops, which offered sandwiches, burgers, tacos, soups, and salad, Gogo Pot is a hot pot spot. And they are an all-you-can-eat rotary hot pot restaurant—that’s where items travel along a rotating conveyor belt. Makes me think of track sushi.
The tagline is “Fresh ingredients • Fun dining.” I’m definitely intrigued. Also, one of the persons behind this restaurant is Shiyong Lin—someone with the same name is also behind the very popular restaurant Bag O Crab. It not would surprise me if these were the same individual. 11374 NE Evergreen Pkwy, Hillsboro
Conscious Sedation has closed. Last weekend was their final weekend. They had a big beer presence at the Bantu Island Food Cart Pod. Sorry to see them go. 1505 NE Alberta Street, Portland
Pip’s Pub will open in Gresham. While it’s sad for us in Portland that Paqui has closed, Andres and his family will open a new restaurant in Gresham called Pip’s Pub. A liquor license application was filed at the end of January. This will be located about a couple miles east of their first Gresham restaurant, Elixir Mezcaleria. Pip’s Pub will be located in the old Big Apple Pizzeria space, which closed about three years ago. 1125 NE Kane Drive, Gresham
Update: Il Corso opens in February. This is the shop formerly known as Fancy Baby. They are turning into a spot that is an Italian wine bar and salumeria. No exact opening date apart from “coming soon in February.” But they are coming, you know. 1204 NW Glisan Street, Portland
The Richmond Bar space will become Irene’s. The Richmond Bar closed last October, and the space has been empty since then. Back in November I had heard that it was going to be a new spot from the Double Dragon folks, who are behind Irene’s—the two places are only about a mile from each other. The liquor license application says they’ll be open 4pm to midnight every day. 3203 SE Division Street, Portland
