Pono Brew Labs Opens Friday, August 26

Back in March I speculated, thanks to a Bridgetown Bites tipster, that Pono Brewing was opening up in the old Spud Monkeys space (formerly Columbia River Brewing). Since then there have been some articles written to confirm that, which is great news—that empty storefront had such a sad feel to it during the pandemic. Here’s even better news: Pono Brew Labs is opening their doors to the public tomorrow (August 26)!

Suckerpunch Pop-Up Is Closing at the End of August

Mixed feelings accompany this writer on the end of the Suckerpunch pop-up in the Goat Blocks. The final day of service there will be Sunday, August 28. At first, when I got the email about their closing down, I thought, “How is it possible that they are closing?!? It seemed to be going so well.” But… SIKE! The good news: turns out they are taking a break and will be back with new pop-ups, events … and a permanent space.

Yohhei Sato, Gone Too Soon

Earlier this week I was shocked to learn of the sudden death of beloved Portland mobile knife sharpener Yohhei Sato. He sharpened knives under the name Sato Sharpening, and was beloved among so many Portlanders—chefs, food industry pros, and regular people alike. I wanted to take this space to recognize him, honor him, and express my sympathy to those who loved him.
