Goodbye Giant Gyros, Hello Fortune BBQ Noodle House

Perhaps we’ll see some great noodle soups at Fortune BBQ Noodle House. This is pork noodles from long lost Biang! in Flushing, Queens, where I would enjoy delicious noodles and dumplings. Photo credit: Bradley Hawks

While perusing the list of new businesses on the city’s website, I noticed a new restaurant, Fortune BBQ Noodle House. It had been registered with the OR SOS (Secretary of State), incorporated in June of this year. The address turns out to the be the same as Giant Gyros, which closed earlier this year. So, Montavilla is getting a new Chinese restaurant.

Giant Gyros was a pretty popular spot in Montavilla, offering not only gyros but shawarma, falafel, hummus and baba ghanouj, soups, and a Greek Salad, among other things. At one point they had expanded to Tigard, but that also closed. The place was pretty casual, an easy place to get a tasty bite to eat, and I wonder if the new restaurant will continue in that vein.

According to state documents, Fortune BBQ Noodle House is headed by Corina Wang. A Corina Wang was mentioned in a 2020 Portland Monthly article about congee in the Jade District, and she was described as “kind, patient nine-year veteran server Corina Wang” at Kenny’s Noodle House. Looking at the incorporation documents between Kenny’s Noodle House and Fortune BBQ Noodle House, there seems to be some connections between the two as far as personnel, so I’m betting that the Corina Wang from Kenny’s Noodle House is associated with the new Fortune BBQ Noodle House (if not opening the place herself).

There is nothing I’ve found online about what they will offer specifically—of course, noodles and meat are pretty obvious—but perhaps look to Kenny’s for some inspiration. This could be a really nice addition to this central part of Montavilla.

It is unclear when Fortune BBQ Noodle House cold open, but I will look into it. Glad to see something move into that empty Giant Gyros spot, though—empty storefronts are a challenge for any neighborhood.

  1. This is awful. I was hoping to find that Giant Gyros had simply moved to a new location, or that it was being renovated, when I saw the new sign my heart sank as I have driven by it, hoping for it to have opened up again as this is the only one who didn’t rip you off and also kept their food authentic.
Giant Gyros with their fantastic people will be forever missed.
