The area where NE 30th Ave intersects with NE Killingsworth has been home to many delicious places over the years. And a new Italian-American restaurant and bar, Gabbiano’s, will be joining the area, likely in January 2022. It will become the southern neighbor to Ripe Cooperative and will offer good food in a fun atmosphere. “Gabbiano” means “seagull” in Italian.
Here is who they are: “An Italian-American restaurant focusing on seasonality and quality ingredients. Oh, and FUN!! We are focused on fun. Come by and say hello.” Their menu is “driven by a rotating selection of the finest local, organic, highly seasonal ingredients from the area’s best farms, creameries etc.” As for the space, there will be a total of 65 seats—20 outside and 45 inside.
Regarding personnel, it looks like Blake Foster, of the cocktail pop-up Zoo Bar, is involved, as may be Daniel Pickens-Jones, who this past fall posted on his Instagram, “well crap we opened a pizza shop.” (Meta Pizza is the shop in question.) Daniel appears to be the owner of two black-and-white cats, which is a thumbs-up in my book.
And they seem to have a philosophical bent and are looking for staff members who are a good fit with their ethics: “We are building a workplace that is both very equitable and healthy. We are a very small crew, in a small space looking to add mature, responsible, and respectful people who take pride in all aspects of what they do.”
The previous restaurant in that space was Ichiza Kitchen, which departed last October for Inner SE Portland, and is now operating as Jade Rabbit.
Look for Gabbiano’s to be open for five days a week at the start, 4-10pm each day, Wednesday through Sunday.

One fun note re Gabbiano’s- Blake’s partner is David Sigal and Gabbiano means seagull in Italian. We attended their NYE dinner (limited capacity) and the food is outstanding. My faves were the handmade (on site) pastas and the winter root vegetables.
Thanks for your insight, Laura! I bet the NYE dinner was a lot of fun. I love Italian food, and am eager to see what the Gabbiano folks put together. I’m looking forward to checking it all out!
