Capitola Coffee’s new location.
Although this has been a light content week, a variety of tidbits crossed my desk this week, so instead of Four Things for Friday, here are some small bites.
Celebrate with Capitola tonight. Capitola Coffee is hosting an open house party tonight: “Hey friends we are hosting an open house along with Waechter Architecture to launch the opening of our new space. We hope you can stop by on Friday, July 8 from 6 pm to midnight.” This is kind of a big deal, as Capitola is located in an all wood CLT building. Their soft opening is planned for mid-July with full opening in August. 4224 N Mississippi Avenue, Portland
Kolaches at Mudd Works this Saturday. Head to Montavilla’s Mudd Work’s Roastery this Saturday for Kolaches from Stuffed. There will be three options—two meat, one vegan, plus country sausage gravy for dipping. They’ll be available at 9am until they sell out. P.S. they also offer Oatley soft serve ice cream. 6922 NE Glisan, Portland
Three from Montelupo. Montelupo has a lot going on these days and especially this weekend. Here’s what’s up:
- Pinolo Gelato at the market. Half pints of this excellent gelato and sorbetto is available at the market. You can pick up the following flavors (as of this week) in their grab-and-go freezer: stracciatella, nocciola, and lemon basil. Available daily.
- Happy second anniversary, Montelupo! To celebrate, they will be giving away a free box of their house pasta (radiatori, shells, penne, fusilli, cavatappi, or rigatoni) with each jar of their house pasta sauce (house red, tomato butter, or arrabbiata) purchased this weekend (July 9 and 10). Limit: no limit on the number of boxes/sauces but the special applies to in-store purchases only.
- Bake sale for abortion access. On Saturday, July 9 from 10am to 1pm, Montelupo is hosting a bake sale fundraiser for abortion access. All proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood. Bakeries include: Alchemy Desserts, Chelo, Pony Pony Pastry, Saint Frances, Jen’s Pastries, Little Red’s Bakeshop, Mason Kale, Lisa Morguess, Amanda of @email_my_heart, Danielle Bailey Hoeft, TumTum, Rachel of @disco_crybaby, The Fancy Cupcake, and Montelupo. 344 NE 28th Avenue, Portland
Cameo Cafe will get into the hot sauce sales game. Looks like they’going to sell bottles of their housemade gochujang-based hot sauce. My neighbor Josh shared this info and the folowing detail: “It’ll have a fancy printed bottle and everything once it’s released, and being distributed to local specialty stores.” You can still buy it currently at the cafe for $10/bottle. And if you go there for a meal, be sure to get the Strong Bread if they offer it. It makes for some of the best toast I’ve had. 8111 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland
Arrowood is open for lunch. A happy development—they are now open at 11:30am everyday. Pro tip: get the fritters, whatever they are. 5846 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland
Tails & Trotters has closed. This is the part of the post I’m the least happy to write about. It’s been a challenge for them and they are heartbroken: “After weathering a devastating fire in 2017 and the past 2 years of COVID, the sudden loss of key infrastructure makes it impossible for us to effectively operate. In conjunction with skyrocketing costs at every level, we have decided to suspend all operations while we figure out our next steps.” Along with the storefront closing, Saturday, July 9 will be their final day at the PSU farmers market.
However: “Our ham & salami will continue to be available at Cooperativa Market, Market of Choice locations, and a number of restaurants in the Portland area—including Hunnymilk, Pizzeria Otto, Sugarpine Drive-In and more. We will be hosting a “Christmas in July” ham pick up at our shop Saturday, July 23! Our hams freeze wonderfully, and we’ll have all 3 sizes of boneless hams available. Details will be posted in the coming weeks.” 525 NE 24th Avenue, Portland
After 21 years, Pix Patisserie will close. In this case, the closing is due to the owner, Cheryl Wakerhauser, is retiring. And while the Pix space will close, “the Pix-O-Matics are here to stay,” which means you can get your Pix fill at their 24-hr vending machines. Plus they will do special orders, still. Their summer events will continue, meaning the final day to enjoy Pix is Friday, August 26 for the final Flamenco Fridays. You can read more about it all here in the the Retirement News section of the website. 2225 E Burnside Street, Portland
Help MÅURICE let the light back in. Because of the break-ins and vandalism that went on during the pandemic, MÅURICE boarded up their windows. Now that they are fully back open, they want their windows back, too. The plan: to “install new glass windows with a special protective film that will make the glass shatterproof and inhibit break-ins while allowing the maximum light back into the shop.” Help them make this a reality by contributing to their GoFundMe campaign. 921 SW Oak Street, Portland
Snackfest returns in September. “We’re back this September 9 + 10 with all your favorite snacks, drinks and treats.”
Companatico hoagies at Dame in July. Head to Dame on Tuesdays in July for special hoagies by Companatico. Think sandwiches like a meatball parm, roast beef, and even a vegan option. Yum. 2930 NE Killingsworth Street, Portland
Gracie’s Apizza is moving. Sounds like it’s good for Pastificio, too, which serves traditional Emilian cuisine, inside Gracie’s on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings. Gracie’s will be moving a few blocks away and Pastificio will take over the current Gracie’s space. “And for me… A bigger space, a walk in! Lots more natural light! And a space that should make me much more efficient. I plan on being here a long long time.” Everybody wins. 8737 N Lombard Street, Portland (for now)
