In last week’s Small Bites column we mentioned that Ranch Pizza closed in downtown Hillsboro. And now we know what’s taking over in that space: A third location of Society Pie. This adds to their Beaverton and Hillsboro/Tanasbourne locations.
Some Society Pie Background
Society Pie was founded five years ago by Josh and Stacey Kearney. They spent 20 years in the corporate world, all the while yearning for a chance to run their own business. “We’re incredibly grateful for those opportunities,” wrote Josh and Stacey, of their corporate careers.
They continued, “But over time we realized something was missing. Our careers lacked inspiration. They lacked soul.”
So, they left their corporate jobs and started up Society Pie with a lot of passion for pizza—but no experience with restaurants. They also liked to cultivate community, and thought they could bring something special to the suburbs. They worked on their dough recipe and got it to the point where they felt confident enough in it to serve it to others. And that is what really started them off.
It’s also notable that they opened Society Pie in 2021, during the COVID pandemic—truly, a leap of faith. That first Society Pie opened in a space that was previously a pizzeria, which they renovated themselves, so they had that on their side.
What To Expect at the Third Society Pie
I asked Josh and Stacey if there was anything new they’d be offering at this new location. “Same menu, same dough, same family, same vibe, same love for our community!” exclaimed Josh.
Community means everything to them. As an answer to the question, “Why downtown Hillsboro?” they replied, “Because of the people. The incredible small business community. The welcoming spirit. From the very beginning, it simply felt like home.”
And it was of the community support and enthusiasm for them and their work that made it possible for them to open the second location of Society Pie in Tanasbourne in 2023. “The response from our community exceeded anything we could have imagined,” wrote Josh. This second location allowed them to double their efforts in serving neighbors and supporting local schools and nonprofits. I imagine they are looking forward to bringing this mindset to downtown Hillsboro, too.
The Space
They said it was pretty easy to transform the space—as I mentioned earlier, it was a Ranch Pizza until recently—into Society Pie. “Space was pretty turnkey all we had to do was added our signature vibe … we like to say we ‘Society-fied’ it,” remarked Josh.
The space has a lot of big windows, letting in plenty of natural light. There’s some outdoor seating, too, right in front of the pizzeria, plus seating out in the plaza.
They are looking to open this week, likely sometime between today, Tuesday, August 4 and Thursday, August 6.
The Food and Drink at Society Pie
I think they must have had a lot of questions about what kind of pizza they make, and have decided to describe it as “OUR style.” Looking at it, it resembles NY-style (as opposed to Chicago, Detroit, or Neapolitan).
The Dough
They used yeast in their dough (so, this is not naturally leavened dough) along with flour, salt, water, and olive oil. They let the dough cold ferment for 48 to 72 hours before creating each pie, stretching the dough by hand and creating a relatively thin crust.
They top the pizza with mozzarella, sauces, fresh vegetables, and premium meats. They recommend three to four toppings max on their crust.
GF and Vegan
They also offer gluten-free and vegan options. They partner with Portland Gluten Free Bakery for their GF crusts (10″ or 12” sizes). For vegans, the crust itself is already made without animal products, and so they have Follow Your Heart vegan cheese as an option for the plant-based eaters at the table.
No Questions Asked
Additionally: ” If you, or anyone know, is going through some tough financial times and needs a little help, we are here for you. Just reach out to us @societypie503 on Facebook or Instagram and let us know and we will provide FREE dinner for the night. No questions asked. Totally confidential.”
On the Menu
They get a lot of accolades for their garlic knots, and offer a version I don’t often see: Sweet Knots. They coat the knots with melted butter and then cover them with cinnamon sugar. A glaze comes with it on the side. Traditional Garlic Knots come with the option of four sauces: Alfredo, ranch, marinara, pesto, and garlic sauce.

They have a few salads, cheesy breadsticks, and then there’s the pizzas—specialty pies and build your own pies.
One of their best sellers is the Fetta’s Betta—starts with a pesto base, with mozzarella, chicken, and ‘shrooms, topped with feta. The Peace, Love & Parm also looks tempting—starts with red sauce, with mozzarella, pepperoni (cupping, which is the best kind), and then topped with shaved Parmesan cheese, fresh basil, and finish with a balsamic glaze.
The Build-Your-Own side has meats, vegetables, cheese, and some post-bake add-ons. Red sauce is the default, but you can change that to pesto, Alfredo, BBQ, and olive oil, if you like (for an additional cost).
Pizzas come in 10-inch, 14-inch, and 18-inch sizes. Sometimes they do square slices on special.
“This is our family’s pizza journey, and we’re incredibly grateful you’ve chosen to be part of it. Whether you’ve been with us since day one or are just discovering Society Pie, thank you for believing in our dream. We can’t wait to continue serving you for many years to come.”
All the best to Josh and Stacey as they get this place up and running for your pizza-eating enjoyment.

This has been a spot of contention for a while now. Before Ranch was here, this spot was a Sizzle Pie and ran afoul of both Sortis Holdings’ woes and a local culture that really didn’t appreciate the brand.
The spot is a bit off of the main drag, which has been the complaint of some, but I’m convinced that as the suburban radius widens, so does the fussiness about Portland brands. While this corner of Hillsboro welcomed Grand Central, it’s seen Sizzle Pie, Ranch, Top Burmese, and Sudra/Lightning Collective-affiliated The High Ground all turn over as the area clearly wasn’t prepared for them.
More recently, we’ve seen brads like 3 Goats and Urban Decanter’s Ama move in from Forest Grove and have slightly better success, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Society Pie being a suburban brand the area knows may give it a bit of an advantage here, and I’m hoping it can improve the fortunes of that ill-fated pizza corner.
