Small Bites: The Eastburn, Hunnymilk, Wajan, Sorbu, and More

The Eastburn.

The Eastburn has closed. A Bridgetown Bites tipster told me this week that they learned from an employee that the Eastburn shut down on Tuesday; new has spread since then. Their Google business listing confirms it as “Permanently Closed.”

Back in March, we saw via a liquor license application that something called Kitsune Cantina applied for a full on-premises license at The Eastburn’s address. It was unclear then what was up; it’s clearer now. In March, it was advertised that Kitsune Cantina is “a new 7,000 sq ft restaurant and bar in an iconic Central Eastside space,” (now, former home to The Eastburn) and they plan to launch “a high-volume dinner and late-night operation featuring four distinct areas, a year-round patio, and live music/acts.” 1800 E Burnside Street, Portland

And speaking of liquor license applications. The Malarkey submitted theirs with the detail that they’ll have 275 seats. Also, their hours start at 4pm each day, then until 10pm Monday to Thursday, 2:30am Friday and Saturday, and 1am on Sunday. That’s late nite for Portland. Plus, karaoke. 555 NW 12th Avenue, Portland

Hunnymilk will close. Farewell to the sweet little bee—their final brunch service will be Sunday, June 28. They’ve been at it for 11 years! “It’s been quite an unforgettable journey but now it’s time for the next one.” 40 NE 28th Avenue, Portland

Jinju will reopen on N Williams. And just four blocks south of their previous location! They’ll be in the Carbon 12 condo building (and just a block east of the pod with Fwi in it). This location had a Harder Day cafe in it (Happy Cup before that) that closed earlier in June.

Over on Reddit, this was shared: “The [Harder Day] lease was only 8 months and the owners asked if they could move early. Turns out JinJu owns the space and will be reopening their bakery there is some capacity.” A Harder Day employee confirmed it.

A look at Portland Maps confirms the ownership: JINJU DESSERT LLC is the owner of 3494 N Williams. It (retail unit C) was purchased for $575K on 1/5/2023. They hope to open by September 2026. 3494 N Williams Avenue, Portland

Dubai chocolate continues to be popular. It was pretty hot at one point, and maybe still is. In fact, I bought a very tasty version of a Dubai chocolate at Jinju a while back. Right now, Shake Shack offers a Dubai Chocolate Pistachio Shake: pistachio frozen custard mixed with toasted kataifi (shredded phyllo) in a crackable dark chocolate shell.

Crumbl is doing a Soccer Field Dubai-Style Cheesecake, just in time for the World Cup: “A decadent chocolate cheesecake nestled on a chocolate graham crust, topped with crispy Kataifi and pistachio filling, a drizzle of pistachio cream, a dollop of whipped cream, and a soccer ball topper.” No doubt both of these things are sky-high on the calorie front. Multiple locations

Congrats to Wildwood Chocolate. Their Chocolate Raspberry Caramel is the 2026 Good Food Award Confection winner! They were up against over 1,200 entries. This chocolate item “combines velvety rich chocolate caramel with tart raspberry.” Online

Sibeiho is also a Good Food Award winner. Their win is in the Pantry category and it’s their MOF Sambal. I bought a jar of it at the Veganizer Asian Market last weekend, and I can confirm—this stuff is delicious. MOF = Mouth On Fire and it is spicy. It has tomatillos and is vegan. Online

Change has arrived. Offering coffee, tea, and more, this new cafe called Change is located inside Garden Party; they opened on Friday, June 5. They both roast their own coffee beans and use beans from Brooklyn’s SEY. Aside from coffee, they offer Matcha Freak’s Sogen Matcha and Hojicha, Soul’s Masala and Rooibos Chai, and locally-farmed herbal teas from Mariquita Medicinals. They’re open weekdays 7am to 3pm, and weekends 8am to 3pm. 3940 N Williams Avenue, Portland

Grillo’s Italian Bakery is having another one of their porch stand sales this weekend, and the menu looks enticing. Featuring classic Italian American sweets, this spot is especially nostalgic for east coast transplants. The lineup includes their signature rainbow cookies, a moist mini lemon olive oil cake, just the crumb cookies, and newer creations such as tiramisu cookies that put a fresh twist on old favorites. Check ’em out on June 13 and June 14 from 10am, to 5pm or until sold out. Private home

XiAn Kitchen is finally open. Thanks to @micbanh, I’ve learned that XiAn Kitchen has opened their doors recently. We first caught wind of their future arrival last September and I am excited to see a spot dedicated to food from Xi’An and north-central China. The hand pulled noodles get a lot of attention, and you can also get one of their “burgers” likely with lamb and/or pork. I am a big fan of lamb + cumin, a specialty from the region, and hope to find dishes that feature it. Beef noodle soup is also a classic dish from the region. Can’t wait to check them out! 16155 NW Cornell Road, Suite 700, Beaverton

Wajan celebrates 7 years. Tonight from 5pm to 9pm to help them celebrate with special snacks:

  • Ketan Serundeng (turmeric sticky rice w/seasoned toasted coconut), $free for all dine in customers.
  • Jagung Bakar (grilled corn in 1/2 cob glazed w/Indonesian famous margarine “blue band”), $5.
  • Asinan Buah (mix tropical pickled fruits in chili vinegar juice) $6.
  • Indomie Goreng (a bit fancy version of Indonesian instant fry noodles serve with fried egg), $7.
  • Klepon (coconut pandan mochi ball with melted palm sugar filling), $2.5.

They also say that “changes are coming to Wajan” and I’ll be curious to learn more. 4611 East Burnside Street, Portland

Soro Soro also celebrates 7 years. Until Sunday, June 14, enjoy their signature Brookie & Vanilla Ice Cream for just $7. 2250 E Burnside Street, Portland

First foie gras, next kopi luwak? For those not in the know, kopi luwak “is the coffee produced by a cat-like creature called a civet. The civet eats coffee cherries, which get processed in its stomach, and then pooped out its butt.” Zac Cadwalader over at Sprudge wonders if this food product will get banned in Portland like foie has been—civets are kept in captivity and force fed coffee cherries. Stoopid Burger at Lloyd Center will close on Sunday. The original plan was to close on June 28 but foot traffic has decreased and it made sense to shut down earlier than previously planned. They recently opened on NE Glisan, though, so you can get your burgers there. Last day for the Lloyd Center is August 8. 2201 Lloyd Center, Portland

Prologis can’t keep ’em down. The behemoth Prologis logistics center on the old KMart property in East Portland may have displaced the farmstand that used to be there, but it hasn’t disappeared completely. A neighbor says it’s now at NE 148th and Sandy. Lots of berries this time of year. NE 148th Avenue and Sandy Blvd, Portland

Pacific Seafood in the news. The Oregon Coastal Caucus wants DEQ “to put a pause on penalties” regarding some practices by three Pacific Seafood-owned processing facilities. They allegedly discharged “fish guts, chlorine, oil and grease into waterways up and down the Oregon Coast.” Seriously—gross. Last month, the state Department of Environmental Quality levied $3.2 million in combined civil penalties. Read more on OPB. Online

New life for a historic building on the Portland waterfront? Dan Yates, owner of the Portland Spirit, wants to renovate the Portland Visitor Information Center building, according to the Portland Business Journal. This John Yeon-designed building was renovated in 2010 (for $1.5M, paid for by Portland water customers), then leased to the Rose Festival for their HQ. Portland Parks and Recreation owns the building.

Dan wants to create a full-service restaurant with outdoor seating. This was interesting: “The property also includes two kiosks. One is the ticket office for the Portland Spirit and the other is a bicycle rental business. The ticket office is proposed to remain but the other 200-square-foot building would be a walk-up counter associated with the restaurant to serve the Salmon Springs Plaza, according to the application.”

No lease (yet), but he’s optimistic. We’ll keep an eye on it. 1020 SW Naito Parkway, Portland

Little Beast Brewing celebrates 9 years. They’ll be partying on Sunday, June 14 from noon to 4pm at their beer garden on SE Division. Enjoy oysters on the half shell for purchase from Flying Fish, special pours, merch deals, merriment, and free Salt & Straw scoops while they last. 3412 SE Division Street, Portland

Darcelle XV Plaza opens Thursday. It’s finally here! the celebration will be Thursday, June 18 from 11am to 1pm, with a formal program and ribbon-cutting from noon to 12:45pm. Poison Waters will emcee, family friends of Darcelle, the Mayor will be there. Gay Men’s Chorus will perform, as well as DJ Aspen. There will be refreshments. 800 SW Harvey Milk Street, Portland

The Array Food Hall has a website. I’ve mentioned The Array, located in a significant mass timber building in East Portland, from time to time, but they never had an online presence. They do now! You can find it here. Online

Gin Thai celebrates 10 years. And they are doing it with a throwback menu all month:
“From nostalgic 16 years ago as a food cart in Downtown to the present, and look ahead to the future. Through this June, we offer an automatic 10% off the ultimate throwback signature dish: Khao Soi.” 3176 NW 185th Avenue, Portland

Golden Key, formerly of Sandy, has reopened in Gresham. This popular American-style Chinese restaurant closed last year and has made it to their new home in Gresham. They open Friday, June 5, and so far has gotten a lot of praise from the community. I’m curious about the BBQ Ends, spicy wontons, XLB, the Spicy Mushroom Tofu, Hawaii Tofu, and the meatless fried rice. They have a few GF items, too. Full menu is here. 2482 SE Burnside Road, Gresham

Sebastiano’s celebrates 6 years. First they opened a tiny spot in Montavilla, then they moved to Sellwood for a much bigger space, and they continue to put out so many delicious things, whether it’s their rainbow cookies, olive oil, ricotta cake, sandwiches, and more. This month they have some additional yums: slushies, sandwich specials, an almond bombolini, GF desserts, and more. 8235 SE 13th Avenue #7, Portland

Imperial Bottle Shop & Taproom is looking for pop-ups. Are you a pop-up looking to find a place to do your thing? Imperial Bottle Shop & Taproom wants to hear from you. Shawn at Imperial messaged me with, “Wondering if you know of any food pop-ups looking for a venue. We are trying to book more at Imperial this summer.” DM him on Instagram to connect. 3090 SE Division Street, Portland

Straightaway Cocktails at PDX. They’ve had a kiosk at PDX since 2024 and on Wedesday, July 15 they are having their grand opening at their new bar at PDX. It’s 1,000 square feet in size and is in Concourse C. Additionally, this Sunday, June 14 is their last day of full service at the tasting room on SE Hawthorne. You can still shop and pickup curbside until Saturday, July 18. 901 SE Hawthorne Blvd and 7000 NE Airport Way, Portland

Mémoire Cà Phê grand reopens today. The’ve been in soft opening mode for a little bit, and they open officially at the new space today (it’s the old Bae’s Chicken space). The full grand opening dates are Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14 from 8am to 2pm. Along with more space to work with, they have expanded their menu. 3003 NE Alberta Street, Portland

Sumo Sushi has opened. Looks like they opened officially on Monday, June 8. “We’re excited to bring fresh sushi, sizzling grill favorites, and delicious ramen to our newest location.” This is the location in the old Shari’s across the way from the Delta Carts Food Park.

They do have some grand opening specials: 10% off your first visit if your entire table registers as a Sumo Member the first time you’re in. And you 30% off on your birthday (dine-in only). 9730 N Whitaker Road, Portland

Sorbu is back (at least for yesterday and today). 3pm to 8pm or until they sell out. Here’s the menu. He’s making lamb shoulder with some lovage, which is one of the most magical herbs around (I used some recently in a grated turnip-apple salad, so good). Plus blueberry lovage lemonade SAY WHAT‽ I hope a more regular return is in store when Sure Shot opens soon. 5011-B NE 42nd Avenue, Portland

Castle Wyrd’s grand opening is June 20. They are super excited about the opening of the gates of Castle Wyrd, the new location of Wyrd Leatherworks & Meadery this Year 9, the Year of Fellowship. On that day there will be a ribbon cutting at 3pm and they’ll be open until 10pm (minors allowed until 8pm). Cosplay encouraged.

They’ll have a paired-down menu for opening day to make things easier on everyone. This means no tasting flights; glass pours only. They will happily sell you bottles and merch that day, too. Also note: “The castle will probably not be fully done by this date, and we will still be upgrading and adding to it for the next few months as we settle in.” 13209 SE McLoughlin Blvd, Milwaukie

Bar Siete to open in old Shaku Bar space. I saw a Portland liquor license application for this back in April, and now there’s a bit of movement via the OLCC’s database. Shaku Bar closed April 11, leaving behind many heartbroken patrons. One of the persons behind Bar Siete appears to be Oswaldo Nino Bibiano, which is a name associated with Smart Donkey, a “burreria,” that offers burritos and bowls. 3448 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland

Balong Panaderia’s year one celebration is this weekend. They turned one back in May and promised some celebratory goodness to come. It’s here this weekend! On Saturday, June 13 they’ll have regular brunch service with their friends Cup Coffee and Salvie Donuts until 1:30pm.

At 6pm that day, they’ll be having a birthday celebration. Food from Pamana, Makulit, and Kalesa Coffee, with tunes spun by J-Marq. Here’s the menu. Congrats, guys! 2850 SE 82nd Avenue, Unit 27 Portland

Get ready for Yin Yang Burger. Their Instagram says, “Balance in every bite.” They’ll be opening at CORE, and I imagine it will be a stall rather than a cart. Hanry Ho, one of CORE’s owners, is behind this new project. 3612 SE 82nd Avenue, Portland

New drink menu items. Here are a couple of spots that caught my eye:

  • Good Measure has three new drinks:
    • Toasted Coconut Latte: housemade toasted coconut syrup, espresso, milk, coconut cream cold foam, toasted coconut.
    • Pastelito Matecha: pureed guava, matcha, milk, cream cheese cold foam, dehydrated guava
    • Ocean Breeze Fizzy Tea: sparkling coconut water, tart lemon Spirulina, hibiscus tea float.
  • The Heist also has three new drinks:
    • Key lime chai with graham cracker sprinkles.
    • White chocolate raspberry mocha.
    • Marionberry matcha.

Tale of Us pizza cart has officially opened at Prost! Marketplace. They popped up in various spots arount won, but now have a permanent home at the Prost! Marketplace pod. It was founded by folks in the beer brewing world, Darren and Ny Provenzano. New School Beer has more info:

“The pair met in Vietnam where Darren’s beers for Heart of Darkness Brewing won multiple awards. They relocated to Portland after the pandemic scuttled plans to open their own brewery in Saigon. While in Portland they created Fracture Brewing, but later left the brand for Ny to join the team at Loyal Legion and Darren to work as head brewer at ForeLand Beer. They started Tale of Us Pizza as a pop-up series from places like The Beermongers, Everywhere Beer, Mayfly, Threshold Brewing, and more before recently finding a permanent home at Prost Marketplace.”
