Slightly tardy this month, but surgery takes time to recover from and to get one’s focus back. Feeling good in recovery, and happy to see what was particularly interesting to visitors in September—restaurants and figs is what it looks like. As always, thanks for reading!
5. My New Fruit Love is the Adriatic Fig

This past weekend I made it over to Fig Fest at One Green World Nursery. One of the things that was on my docket was to try the different figs they had to offer; there were seven varieties to sample.
4. First Tastes: Nepali Kitchen in Northeast Portland

Despite its failings, there are some gems on Nextdoor when it comes to food. I’ve found direct-access to top-notch sources of Indonesian food, epic Lasagna Bolognese, Texas-style tortillas and plenty of local food recommendations, including the subject of this blog post, Nepali Kitchen. They’ve opened in what seems to be a house on the corner of NE Fremont and 49th Ave (across the street from Stanich’s), with a lovely little courtyard established in the front yard. And the food is excellent.
3. Two Future Openings: Ben & Esther’s and Nico’s Ice Cream

Two businesses beloved to many Portlanders are opening new locations: Ben & Esther’s, which opened their first bagel shop in Roseway; and Nico’s Ice Cream, a cart offering New Zealand style ice cream, along with a packaged half-pint program as well. Ben & Esther’s will open in the Alberta Arts District and Nico’s in Cully.
2. Beaverton Restaurant Week 2021

I was really happy to hear that Beaverton Restaurant Week is back for its fifth year! It will take place between Thursday, September 23 and Sunday, October 3 (so, a little over a week). In 2017, their inaugural restaurant week featured 28 restaurants; this year they expect over 35 restaurants to participate.
1. The Bulgogi + Du Kuh Bee Connection

In the “that’s news to me” category, it has only become clear (to me) recently that The Bulgogi Korean restaurant in the Hollywood District is managed by the Du Kuh Bee family. I had seen the signage on The Bulgogi’s window for a long time about their offering Du Kuh Bee’s famous noodles, but I was unaware just how close the two businesses are. In fact, the official name of the restaurant is now “The Bulgogi + Du Kuh Bee.”
Honorable Mention: PORTLAND AREA CULTURAL + FOOD FESTIVALS, a page of cultural festivals that have a strong food/drink element. I did some updates and it’s nice to see that people were visiting it; hope it is helpful.
