Small Bites: Rose City Coffee Co, Bluto’s, Woodblock Bakery, and More

Brooklyn neighborhood’s Rose City Coffee Co will be open 24-hours a day. This seems big for Portland: a 24-hour coffee shop. Starting Tuesday, November 11, you can head there really any time of the day and they’ll be open. There will be perpetual coffee, of course, but also their breakfast and lunch sandwiches; pastries and bagels will be served 24/7; their full menu, including flatbread items and mocktails, will be served 3pm to 5am. 3370 SE Milwaukie Avenue, Portland

Pan de Muerto in Portland. Over at The Oregonian, Chiara Profenna has put together a roundup of bakeries making pan de muerto this year. It’s a sweet bread for Day of the Dead, celebrated November 1 and 2. “The bread’s round shape symbolizes the cycle of life and death, while the cross of dough on top represents bones.” Check it out. Nepalese beer at Nom Nom Wings in NW Portland. I noticed that Nom Nom Wings is offering some Nepalese brand’s of beer, which I’ve never encountered before. And on top of that, the video has Irish music in the background—an intriguing cultural mix. From what I can tell the beers are Barahsinge Pilsner and Nepal Ice Lager. 524 NW 14th Avenue, Portland

News for wine lovers. There are three new wine-oriented spots setting up shop in Portland. No Doubt Wine Bar in St Johns where The Groovy Floret was; and Spin the Bottle in the Pearl, kitty-corner to Tanner Springs Park. Jess Miller Wines will also occupy an industrial space in Brooklyn. 8408 N Lombard Street, 1112 NW Marshall Street, and 3315 SE 19th Avenue, E, Portland

The Little Blue Store—what they’ve got. We wrote about them earlier this year, but did not have details on the hot food they are serving. Here is more info—vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free Ethiopian-inspired dishes like Ater Kik, Misir Kik, Alicia Atkilt, Gomen, Mushroom Dulet, and Sambusa. Each is paired with 100% teff enjera bread.

Ames Meat Research in Milwaukie will close. This week Milwaukie Floral, which has been around for 90-some years, announced the closure of their storefront. That means Ames Meat Research, which is located there, will have to move. They do not know where or really any details at this moment in time. They’ll let us know when they know what’s up. 3306 SE Lake Road, Milwaukie

New fall menu items at RingSide Steakhouse. They’re changing up their menu to feature “new dishes that celebrate the warmth, texture, and depth of the season.” Highlights include:

  • Chicken Liver Mousse with Riesling Gelee, Braised Pear, Pickled Chanterelle and Toasted Brioche.
  • Tamarind Glazed Pork Belly with Spiced Carrot Puree, Escabeche, Cilantro, Lime.
  • Roasted & Glazed Fall Squash with Ras el Hanout, Tahini, Labneh, Pomegranate Molasses and Pumpkin Dukkah.
  • Crispy Brussels Sprouts with Apple Cider Reduction, Brown Butter, Mascarpone, Speck, Granny Smith Apple and Crispy Sage.

These new dishes join RingSide’s signature lineup of classic steaks, prime rib, and sides. 2165 W Burnside Street, Portland

New fall menu at Norah on Belmont. And they sound fabulous: Lemongrass Chili Brussels Sprouts, Tom Kha soup, Mushroom Wonton soup, Volcano Tempura Noodle soup, and Garlic Yu Choi. Additional new items on the Norah Alberta menu are coming soon. 3801 SE Belmont Street, Portland

Tréla has a new fall menu, too. Here are some of the dishes you can anticipate on your next visit (with descriptions because it may not be evident right off the bat what’s involved):

  • Arní Stifádo: Slow braised lamb shank, pearl onions, with warm aromatic sauce. Served over creamy polenta.
  • Garides Hilopita: Sautéed prawns in a creamy feta tomato-ouzo sauce, with homemade pappardelle pasta.
  • Gemistó Ortýki * (GF): Two quail, stuffed with loukaniko sausage, dried figs, currants, and toasted pine nuts. Served over sautéed kale. finished with grape beurre blanc sauce.
  • Saláta Róka (V, GF): Arugula with dried figs, candied walnuts, pickled onions, and kasseri cheese, tossed in a fig jam vinaigrette.

They are also featuring live bouzouki music every third Monday of the month. 6000 NE Glisan Street, Portland

Meta Pizza turns 4. No specials, just acknowledging their hard work and consistency to accomplish this. “To our neighbors, our regulars, our first-timers, and everyone who’s shared a pie or a laugh with us — thank you for making this wild ride so delicious. Woodblock Bakery is now open daily. This bakery inside Woodblock Chocolate now is open 7-days a week! You can check out their goods from 7am to 3:30pm. Plus, ’tis the season for chocolate baby heads! 1715 NE 17th Avenue, Portland

Farewell, Missionary Chocolates, NE Glisan. Today is their last day at the NE Glisan location, as they move their NE Portland customer-facing operation over to their new-ish Hollywood location. 2712 NE Glisan Street, Portland

Kate’s has a non-coconut milk ice cream flavor (still vegan). The folks at this celebrated plant-based ice cream shop mentioned their ice cream flavor made without coconut milk. Whether you can’t have or just don’t like coconut milk, this one’s for you: Salted Chocolate Pretzel is made with a rich vanilla oat-based ice cream swirled with chocolate syrup and packed with chocolate-covered gluten-free pretzels. Better Half sandwich shop is closing. Their current location on N Fremont off of N Williams is a building that is being sold, “and the new owner has other plans for the space.” Their final day of service will be Wednesday, November 26 (the day before Thanksgiving). They are actively looking for a new location, hopefully with a larger kitchen. Lauretta Jean’s Thanksgiving pies FYI. Lauretta Jean’s has probably the most anticipated Thanksgiving pies in Portland, and they gave us a head’s up over on Instagram: “Thanksgiving pre-orders will go live on our website this Saturday, November 1st. We expect to sell out so make sure you get your pre-orders in promptly or you’ll be sad! This will be our only announcement.” We’ll add them to our Thanksgiving 2025 roundup, which has a Pies/Dessert section now. 3402 SE Division Street, Portland

Indian Food Week is coming to Portland in November. Anubhav Jain, who founded CommonPlate (concept: “Make sure everyone in the U.S. has access to a warm, nourishing, organic meal for under $5) and runs Indian Food Explorations, where he produces Indian food events in the Portland area. He is now launching Indian Food Week, November 9 to 15. There’s a kickoff event at Bhuna (ticketed, $45/each). There are not many details on the restaurants participating, but keep an eye on his Instagram account. 704 NW 21st Avenue, Portland

Bluto’s #2 has soft opened. They posted on Instagram that they were still on target to open their second location by the end of the month, and they have! They are located in the old Afuri space. Vanessa and Vicki of @foodbellypdx posted about their first meal there on October 28. Looks like a nice big space, too. 2855 SW Cedar Hills Blvd, Suite 100, Beaverton
