Summer Supper From Urban Gleaners Is a Good Time for a Great Cause

One of my favorite dishes from last year’s Summer Summer was Goi Cá: turmeric catfish, mint, basil, scallion, greens, onion, apples, peanuts, fish sauce, and black sesame rice cracker, from Richard Văn Lê of After Ours/Matta/Mémoire Cà Phê.

Summer Supper returns to the Redd in September! This thoughtful tasting event features over a dozen talented and well-respected Portland chefs who will create dishes made from gleaned ingredients. It is also a way to celebrate Urban Gleaners’ 20th anniversary. Part of the mission behind Summer Supper is to fight food waste and food insecurity in our community, and this event is an excellent way to showcase that.

Early bird tickets are live now, but only for a limited time. Summer Supper is an all-ages, family-friendly event.

Summer Supper Ticket Pricing Info

I thought I’d start with that first, since the early bird ticketing window is small. You can purchase Early Bird tickets until Thursday, July 2.

  • General Admission: $85, includes one drink token and a Summer Supper reusable cup.
  • VIP: $128, includes 30 minutes early entry, two drink tokens, custom event tote bag with goodies, and a Summer Supper reusable cup.

Regular sales start Friday, July 3 and go until Sunday, September 13, the day of the event. The perks accompanying both ticket levels remain the same with regular sales as they do with VIP. Buy your tickets here.

How it Works and the Good Summer Supper Does

Summer Supper is what they call a “walkaround event,” where you go from stall to stall, tasting the various dishes made by any one of the participating chefs. They’ll have signs up with the name of the dish, what it’s made of, and which ingredients are gleaned/upcycled. Not only is the food delicious, but by using gleaned ingredients they avoid food waste and give new life to ingredients that may have previously been considered castoffs.

This is the kind of thing the folks at Urban Gleaners do every day. They rescue over a million pounds of food from landfills and turn it into nourishing meals that feed over 8,000 food-insecure families in the Portland metro every week—no questions asked.

A press release I received has this great quote from Fatou Ouattara (Akadi), who will be participating in Summer Supper this year:

“Zero-waste cooking is in my roots,” said Fatou Ouattara, chef and owner of Akadi PDX. “Growing up in Côte d’Ivoire, with family from Mali and Burkina Faso, nothing good ever went to waste. That’s exactly why we love working with Urban Gleaners: rescuing good food and turning it toward fighting hunger in our community. The event is such a joy from start to finish, and we can’t wait to come back and do it again.”

Urban Gleaners: Their 20th Year Around the Sun

Since this is a chance to celebrate an anniversary, there will be cake and celebratory activities. That includes some interactive booths hosted by Urban Gleaners’ nonprofit and local farm partners. There will be educational activities having to do with food systems and sustainability, too.

I hope you will consider attending this year’s Summer Supper. I went last year and had a great time. The creativity and tastiness in all the food was impressive. I’ll see you there!
