Sunday is for cannoli at Cartside. Over at the Cartside food pod, Holy Shannoli is doing a cannoli pop-up on Sunday from noon to 8pm. You can see their menu here—much more elaborate than the traditional cannoli decorated with chocolate chips, nuts, or candied citrus peel. 1207 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland
Nevermind is open. After many months of anticipation, the new bar Nevermind in the old Apex Bar space is finally open! They had their official opening night last night. Congrats to Quinn, David, and all who were involved with this project. 1216 SE Division Street, Portland
GF pastries on Saturday in Sellwood. French-tastic Patisseries, which bills itself as “Portland’s 1st artisanal GF French patisseries,” will pop up at Yours Truly in Sellwood on Saturday from 10am to 2pm. She’ll be offering new GF French patisseries, some with Asian flavors, including black sesame & lemon meringue; and a Hojicha, Asian pear and Hazelnut St Honoré tartlet. You’ll also be able to access some of her classics like Umami tigré, Pecan praliné tigré, PSL eclair, pecan maple syrup vanilla financier and, matcha black sesame cookie shot. And all gluten-fre. 7834 SE 13th Avenue, Portland
New menu at Bastion Eat Well. Also in Sellwood is the news that Bastion has switched to their fall menu, which you can see here. I spy pumpkin, sweet potato, and apple throughout the menu. 6116 SE Milwaukie Avenue, Portland
Get your Sunday brunch at The Heist. They started their new brunch program last weekend, and will continue brunch on Sundays for the foreseeable future. Multiple carts will have special brunchy menu items, as well as special menu items inside at the coffee shop and bar. 4727 SE Woodstock Blvd, Portland
The Richmond Bar will close. Their final night of service will be Friday, October 17. They’ve been in business for 13 years on SE Division and 32nd. They posted the closure announcement on Facebook: “It is with heavy hearts, and much deliberation, we have decided to close down The Richmond Bar. We’ve had 13 great years on the corner of 32nd. Those years brought us great customers, amazing staff, and fantastic memories. We appreciate every person who came together to make that happen.” 3203 SE Division Street, Portland
The Little Blue Store reopens. I was originally tipped off to this by local reporter Samantha Swindler, and have learned more since then. They transitioned earlier this week from a basic convenience store to a community-oriented grocer—selling fresh, healthy food over tobacco products. It was made possible by a $20,000 grant from the Clackamas County Public Health Division, which is funded by the Oregon Health Authority.
Along with fresh produce they also offer hot Ethiopian food. The owners of the store worked with Livelihood NW during this transition. Their grand re-opening featured a ribbon cutting, the presence of city and county officials, and community members. Congrats to Selam and Hagos on this new path in their business! 2936 SE Washington Street, Milwaukie
A Portland Mercado update. Over on Montavilla News they have an update on the state of the Portland Mercado, which was damaged by a fire in January 2024. Looks like they are shooting for a summer 2026 re-opening. Read more here. 7238 SE Foster Road, Portland
Hogweed arrives this Sunday. Not to be confused with the infamous Giant Hogweed, it’s a vegan barbecue concept from the good folks at Feral. This Sunday from 2pm to 6pm enjoy BBQ tempeh, lions mane brisket quesadillas, an oyster mushroom sandwich, and more. No reservations, just show up; takeout available. And best of all, “chilling encouraged.” 1640 NE Killingsworth Street, Portland
Better late than never: Wax Social. I’m a little slow on the draw here but I wanted to tell you that Wax Social opened in the west hills area on August 12. They identify as a “speakeasy and listening lounge,” where you can get craft cocktails and small bites, with vinyl spinning all night. It’s in Portland but sits along a skinny arm of Beaverton. 9900 SW Canyon Road, Portland,
Pizza is going full time at Bauman’s on Oak. They announced it this week: “We have heard your calls, your prayers, your hopes, your dreams. We have answered them. Pizza will now be available every day that we are open!!!!” 930 SE Oak Street, Portland
Final weekend for The Deck. Yet another reminder that summer is over—The Deck will close after this weekend, re-opening again next year when it gets warmer in the spring/summer. This easy-going restaurant on a deck on the Columbia River is one of the joys of a Portland summer. Sorry to say farewell but I’ll be happy to welcome them back next year. 2901 NE Marine Drive, Portland
Portland is the top city for vegans/vegetarians. That is, according to WalletHub (but I imagine plenty of Portlanders agree). The O sums it up: “WalletHub ranked 100 of the largest U.S. cities based on 17 metrics — from the cost of groceries for vegans and vegetarians to the number of salad shops per capita.” And PDX ranked Number 1. Read more here. Multiple locations
Bar Rione has closed. They opened in the Pearl District in 2018 as the waiting room for Piazza Italia, which remains open. They closed recently, and have been in the process of selling everything from high-end equipment to bar ware. Sorry to see them go. 804 NW 12th Avenue, Portland
Barbur Brews has their grand opening this Sunday. Back in September 2024 we mentioned Barbur Brews was coming to Southwest Portland. Well, their grand opening is this Sunday! They’ll be open 7am to 4pm, with many specials to celebrate their new coffee and breakfast cart. Glad to see them finally open! 7365 SW Barbur Blvd, Portland
Xi’an Kitchen is coming to Beaverton. This Chinese restaurant will be located next to Mademoiselle Nails (and not too far Taste of Sichuan, which I’ve heard has had some activity in it recently). Right now I’ve only found their Yelp page, but in a bit of cursory research it looks like there are Xian Kitchens around the country, not necessarily run by the same people. Xi’an always makes me think of Xi’an Famous Foods, which opened in the Golden Mall in Flushing in 2005, and was made famous by a trip there by Anthony Bourdain. Noodles, dumplings, cumin lamb burger, cucumber salad—all so, so good in that awesomely modest mall. I’ll keep an eye on it. 16155 NW Cornell Rd Suite 700, Beaverton
Jim & Patty’s Beaverton is now … a Spielman Bagels. Over on Facebook Jim & Patty’s in Beaverton announced that their location has “closed and transformed into a Spielman Bagels.” However, you can get some J&P classics at the bagel shop: Pig Newtons, Princess Cake, and NY Crumb Cake. 4130 SW 117th Avenue, Beaverton
Explosion at the food cart pod. I was sorry to hear about this tragic event from this past Tuesday. From OPB: An “explosion happened at the Springwater Cart Park, located at 8145 SE 82nd Ave., at about 4:45 a.m. The area used to be known as Cartlandia.” Apparently a propane tank stored inside one of the carts was leaking, and when it found an ignition source it blew up. Nobody was hurt but “Eight food carts were damaged as well as two nearby permanent structures.” Wishing everyone the best there as they recover. 8145 SE 82nd Avenue, Portland
La Factoria will open in the Yard. The Yard, an apartment building in Southeast Portland that is also home to Knot Springs and Yokohama Skyline Eatery, will welcome La Factoria soon. Calling themselves, “Portland’s Newest Destination,” it looks like Brian Palma from Calle 6 nightclub is involved. They hope to be open daily from 7am to 11:30pm with live music on the weekends starting at 10am, plus DJs, too. Also planned: brunch and dinner, coffee, plus a full liquor license. 22 NE 2nd Avenue, Portland
The final Fridays at l’Orto Nostrano (The Nostrana garden) is tonight. From 5:30pm to 8pm, people get to enjoy a relaxed evening in their kitchen garden for wine and wood-fired pizza. The switch up the wines each week and tonight it will be all about wines from Emilia-Romagna. Tickets are $21 via Tock but walk-ins are welcome. Read more about the event plus you can get your ticket on their Tock page. 1401 SE Morrison Street, Portland
